In March 1981, the first of thirteen half-hour Star Wars radio programs produced by KUSC-FM in Los Angeles and National Public Radio were aired on public radio. The results were phenomenal generating 50,000 letters and phone calls in a single week, 750,000 listeners per episode and a 40% jump in the overall NPR audience. Star Wars was later rebroadcast in late 1982 and followed by ten half-hour The Empire Strikes Back radio programs which began initial broadcast in February 1983.
The series contains a greatly expanded version of Part IV of the saga, Star Wars: A New Hope , with characters and episodes not seen in the films, all combined with Oscar-winning movie music and sound effects.
